FYI - Weekly Homework
1. Assignments- EVERY week new assignments for the upcoming week will be posted on MONDAY. They are to be done in the homework book provided and handed in on the following MONDAY. MATHLETICS ASSIGNMENTS due MONDAYS online! Home Reading books exchanged Wed/Fri! Character Ed. bags due Thursdays (or sooner)!
2. Spelling Words- Every week students will be required to learn a list of new words. Tests will be on Fridays, so practice them as much as you can throughout the week!
3. READING!! - Students are required to read (Raz-Kids leveled books) for 15-20 minutes (each night).
**Please note: Poetry folders will come home occasionally as well. Reading these independently or together can be included as part of the reading minutes.**
*TLC obligations: Parents are asked to go over and correct their child's homework weekly. The teacher will be regularly going over the homework journals to see that students and parents are following these TLC obligations.*
Homework Folders:
Homework notebooks will come home in their plastic communication folder on Mondays but the homework will be posted and printable here on Fridays. This notebook will be used for practicing spelling words, printing, math assignments, and any other assignment that has been given from the teacher. Spelling notebooks will also come home in the folder on Mondays. The spelling book is ONLY for the spelling tests so you are able to see how your child is doing and know which words need further practice. Spelling notebooks can be returned to school after the test has been reviewed and initialed by parents. Keep the homework notebook at home all week and have your child return the their homework to school every Friday (or Thursday on short weeks).
Poetry Folders:
Poetry folders will be sent home in addition to homework and home reading. Please send Poetry folders back on Monday. Some of these poems are more challenging, so please read them WITH your child. We call this "shared reading". Other poems your child may be able to read to you independently or with a little help. Ideas to discuss with your child: - rhyming words - sight words - favourite part/feelings - any graphemes/double graphemes they recognize.
Spelling Practice and Tests:
A list of spelling words will be posted on Weebly each week. Please practice the new words and review others (the ones your child is having difficulty with) as often as you can throughout the week. Written spelling practice should be written in the homework notebook. EVERY WEEK, please have your child write each word at least 3 times. Make sure they use correct letter formation and spacing. Ask your child to: SEE IT, SAY IT, STRETCH IT, WRITE IT, CHECK IT each time. To help reinforce how to use and spell words correctly, your child can also use the word in a sentence. Have your child write 3 or more sentences that use the words from the week. This helps them to transfer the correct spelling and use of the word into their writing. Each sentence should use two or more of the words. For example, "I can run." , or if your child is ready to add new words and detail," I can run to the large, green park with my friend." For beginning writers, keep it simple. It helps them to say their sentence out loud first before writing it down. Students need to make sure each sentence begins with a capital letter and ends with punctuation (. ! ?). Sight words we have worked on must be spelled correctly. When trying new words, encourage your child to stretch out the sounds and write the letters that match the sounds. Their spelling should be phonetic (sounds), but may not have the correct letters. You can write the correct spelling above for them, but they do not need to re-write it.
When students print their spelling words, please have them:
* Print the date (first 4 letters of the month, period, and the number).
* Print .(dot) .(dot) x down the left hand margin, if they need 2 lines of space to print.
* If your child can print neatly on a single line, please do so.
* Remember tall letters are 2 spaces high, short letters are 1 space high, and tails of letters drop below the base line (below the X)
* The letters should touch the line at the top and sit on the bottom sitting line.
* Leave a space between each word.
***Other ways to practice the spelling words include:
* Make up and write "Super sentences" using as many of the sight words as you can.
* Put words in alphabetical order
* Build the words with magnetic letters
* Make play dough letters and build words
* Rainbow words drawn with crayons
* Stamp the word with letter stamps
* Rubbies – print the word on paper with a textured sheet under it
* Find the words in your storybooks
* Make 2 sets of words, 1 set beginning with a capital letter, and 1 set with a lower case. Play memory by turning 2 cards over. Say the words. If they match, keep them, if they don’t, turn them back over.
